“Sounds that wash the waste out of your brain while you sleep.”

You press play, then get into bed. The view count is in the millions. The comments say people slept well.

The first half of the claim is true. The second half is the problem.

The research

In 2013, a team at Rochester watched something strange happen in sleeping mice. As the animals fell asleep, the space between their brain cells widened by about 60%. Wider gaps mean more fluid can move through them — and the clearance rate of amyloid-beta, the protein that accumulates in Alzheimer’s disease, went up compared with waking.

The brain has no lymphatic vessels like the rest of the body. Instead, cerebrospinal fluid runs in along the blood vessels and pushes waste out ahead of it. The system is called the glymphatic system, and it runs hardest while you sleep.

In 2019 it was seen directly in humans. Measure a sleeping person’s brainwaves, blood flow, and cerebrospinal fluid at the same time, and all three pulse together. Every time a slow wave rises — the long, slow oscillation of deep non-REM sleep — fluid surges into the brain. The slow wave is what drives the cleaning.

So “your brain gets washed while you sleep” is not a metaphor.

What sound can and cannot do

Could you strengthen those waves with sound?

You can. In 2013 a team in Lübeck showed how. Record a sleeper’s EEG, and play a short tone at the precise moment the slow wave is rising. The waves grow larger, and memory consolidation improves with them. The method is called closed-loop auditory stimulation.

It carries two conditions a video can never meet.

The first is the EEG. Without knowing where in the wave you currently are, there is nothing to synchronise to.

The second is decisive. A 2020 study compared timings directly. Land the tone on the up-phase and slow waves strengthen. Land it on the down-phase and the opposite happens — the waves get weaker.

A video cannot see the brainwaves of the person playing it. So its tones land wherever they land: sometimes on the rising phase, sometimes on the falling one. Sometimes amplifying, sometimes cancelling.

“The sound that flushes your brain” has nothing behind it yet.

Through a Japanese lens

Japan has a word for this: yojo (養生).

Kaibara Ekiken wrote Yojokun in 1713, at the age of 83. It contains no dramatic cures. Do not overeat. Do not stay up late. Do not let anger sit. Walk. The claim is that health is made by how you spend your days.

The opposite of yojo is not illness. It is outsourcing.

Drink the thing, play the thing, and the body will sort itself out. When we expect that, we have quietly handed our own life over to a product. Ekiken kept writing the reverse: you arrange the conditions; you do not command the result.

Brain clearance has the same shape. The sound does not flush anything. A night of deep sleep does. Which means the work is not finding the right audio — it is building the conditions under which deep sleep happens.

Unglamorous. But this half has the evidence.

Lab notes

  • A video claiming to wash your brain has no basis for the claim. Without an EEG, its timing is chance. Not necessarily harmful — but not demonstrably useful either.
  • Go after the amount of deep sleep itself. Consistent sleep and wake times. Morning light. Less caffeine after mid-afternoon. Dull advice, but it is the lever that actually moves slow-wave sleep.
  • If you use sound, aim it at falling asleep faster. Quiet ambient audio can help you drop off. That does not make the cleaning more efficient; it makes it start earlier.
  • When you see a number, check what it measured. That “60%” is the expansion of extracellular space in mice. It is not a promise that your waste drops by 60%. Numbers change meaning as they travel.
