The body wasn’t just asking for more food in general. It was asking, specifically, for the foods that deliver the fastest energy.

This is a hormonal appetite signal operating on incomplete information. Ghrelin and leptin evolved to track energy balance across a day, not to account for a night of interrupted or shortened sleep — so when sleep debt accumulates, the system reads it as an energy shortfall and escalates the hunger signal accordingly. The craving you feel by 3pm after a short night isn’t a mystery of weak resolve; it’s a hormone doing exactly what it’s built to do, in response to bad information.

The Japanese Lens

There’s an old piece of dietary wisdom in Japan: hara hachi bu (腹八分目) — eat until you’re 80% full. It’s usually taught as a practice of restraint, a discipline you cultivate at the table. But it quietly assumes something: that your hunger signal is trustworthy enough to stop at 80% in the first place.

That assumption holds up on a well-rested night and breaks down on a short one.
