Send 200 hertz to the left ear and 210 hertz to the right.
You hear a beat at 10 hertz — a slow pulse underneath the tone.
But that beat is not sounding anywhere. Measure the air and you find 200 and 210, nothing else. The 10 hertz is assembled by your brain out of the difference between your ears.
The research
The phenomenon has been described since 1839. The question is whether it does anything.
A 2019 meta-analysis pooled 22 studies and 35 effect sizes, covering memory, attention, anxiety, and pain perception.
The result: g = 0.45. Statistically significant, and consistent across studies.
That number is the point of this article.
An effect size around 0.2 is small, around 0.5 medium, above 0.8 large. So 0.45 sits at the lower end of medium. Which means: the effect is real, and it is not dramatic.
The analysis also produced a practical finding. Listening before a task, rather than only during it, produced better outcomes. Whatever is happening takes time to arrive.
A separate 2014 study reported that listening to theta-frequency binaural beats after exercise raised markers of parasympathetic activity and lowered sympathetic ones.
The limit of what sound can do
The phrase that causes trouble is “rewriting your brainwaves with sound.”
There are real examples of audio influencing brain activity. In a 2017 study, short bursts of pink noise were played to sleeping older adults in time with their slow oscillations; slow-wave activity increased, and memory scores the next morning improved.
But that method measures the sleeper’s EEG and fires the sound in phase with the wave. There is a device. There is measurement.
An audio file you press play on and a system that measures and controls are not the same thing. Described with the same phrase — “using sound to affect the brain” — the distinction disappears.
Through a Japanese lens
Japanese has the word awai: the space between two things, the boundary itself.
A binaural beat is born in the awai. It is neither the left tone nor the right one. It appears inside the listener as the difference between them. One ear alone will never hear it.
The same sensibility runs through noh and linked verse. Something arises between performer and audience, between one verse and the next, that is written in neither. The work is not located on one side; it lives in the space between.
And it requires the listener’s participation to exist at all. Which is exactly why headphones are not optional. The moment left and right mix in the air, the awai collapses.
Lab notes
- Without headphones there is nothing to discuss. On speakers the two tones mix before reaching you, and the difference never arrives at the ears separately.
- Set your expectation at g = 0.45. A medium effect, not a different brain. Most reports of “it did nothing” are expectation calibration failures.
- Start it before you start working. The meta-analysis found pre-task exposure outperformed during-task only.
- Distrust anything advertising that it rewrites your brainwaves. A system that does not measure cannot match phase.
