There’s a practice in Japanese culture called 一日一善ichinichi ichizen — which translates roughly as “one good deed per day.” It’s an old Confucian idea that was absorbed into Japanese daily ethics: each day, do one thing for someone else, acknowledge one thing worth valuing.

I used to think of it as a cultural nicety. Then I started reading the neuroscience on gratitude and realized it’s a fairly precise behavioral protocol for training the brain’s reward system.

What Happens in the Brain During Gratitude

Gratitude is not just a pleasant feeling. It’s a specific neural state.

In a 2015 study, Glenn Fox and colleagues at the Brain and Creativity Institute at USC put participants in fMRI scanners while presenting them with scenarios in which they received help during difficult circumstances (survivors of the Holocaust receiving help from strangers). They then measured brain activity when participants felt gratitude.

The regions most reliably activated: the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), associated with social cognition and moral judgment, and the anterior cingulate cortex, involved in empathy and social decision-making. Notably, the mPFC is also the primary hub of what’s called the default mode network — the brain’s “resting” state that underlies self-reflection and future simulation.

Gratitude activates the part of your brain that thinks about yourself, others, and the future — simultaneously.

There’s also a reward system component. Gratitude reliably activates the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and nucleus accumbens — the core dopaminergic reward circuit. This is why gratitude feels good: it triggers the same broad circuitry as receiving an unexpected reward.

The Neuroplasticity Effect

The more striking finding comes from a 2016 study by Joshua Brown and Joel Wong at Indiana University.

They randomized 293 college students (all seeking mental health counseling) into three groups: one that wrote gratitude letters weekly, one that wrote about negative experiences, and one that had no writing task. After 12 weeks, the gratitude group showed greater mental health improvements than the control groups.

But the interesting part was what happened in the fMRI.

Three months after the study ended — after participants had stopped the writing task — the gratitude group still showed greater and more sustained medial PFC activation when shown a gratitude-inducing scenario. The neuroplastic change outlasted the practice itself.

This is the definition of structural learning: the brain changed in a way that persisted after the behavior that caused it stopped. Like building a muscle that stays larger even when you stop training.

The authors hypothesize that the mechanism involves attentional retraining: regular gratitude practice causes the brain’s RAS and attentional networks to gradually prioritize gratitude-relevant information in the environment. The brain, having been repeatedly directed toward what is good and what has been received, begins defaulting to that frame spontaneously.

One Good Deed Per Day: The Ichinichi Ichizen Mechanism

This is where the Japanese practice becomes interesting through a neuroscience lens.

Gratitude is bidirectional: you can feel it as a recipient (“I am grateful for this”) or as a provider (“I was able to do something good”). The neural circuitry is similar in both cases, but the behavioral structure of ichinichi ichizen — actively doing one good thing each day — adds a component that pure journaling may lack.

When you do something kind or helpful, you create a social event that often produces a response — a thank you, a moment of connection, a sense of contribution. This provides an additional dopamine signal beyond the act itself.

More importantly, the search for a good deed to do each day retrains the Reticular Activating System in a direction similar to gratitude journaling: the brain is now regularly looking for opportunities to be good, which causes it to surface those opportunities that were always present but previously filtered out.

The practice is partly motivational and partly attentional. You do more good things because you’re looking for them. You notice more of them because you did them.

What Three Good Things Can Do

Martin Seligman and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania conducted one of the landmark positive psychology studies on a related practice: the “Three Good Things” exercise, where participants wrote down three things that went well each day and their causes.

At one week, participants showed significantly higher happiness and lower depressive symptoms than controls. At one month, six months, and one year, the effect persisted — more strongly than any other positive psychology intervention in the study.

Robert Emmons at UC Davis ran a series of studies finding that participants who kept weekly gratitude journals reported more positive affect, fewer physical health complaints, and more prosocial behavior than those who recorded neutral life events or things that annoyed them.

The dose matters, though. There’s a counterintuitive finding from Sonja Lyubomirsky: doing the gratitude exercise once a week produces better results than doing it daily. Daily repetition can reduce the novelty of the reflection, blunting the emotional response. Weekly practice preserves enough freshness that each reflection feels genuinely new.

The Default Mode Network and Perspective

Here’s a broader mechanism worth understanding.

The default mode network (DMN) is a set of brain regions — including the mPFC, posterior cingulate, and angular gyrus — that activate during rest, self-reflection, and future simulation. It’s the “narrative brain,” the part that tells the story of your life to yourself.

Research suggests that people prone to anxiety and depression show DMN activity biased toward rumination — replaying past negative events and simulating negative future scenarios. Gratitude practice appears to shift the DMN’s default content gradually: the brain’s “idle” simulations begin incorporating more positive material.

This is not about forcing positivity. It’s about changing the default inputs.

The medial PFC, activated by gratitude, is also the hub of this narrative network. Regularly running gratitude through the mPFC may gradually retrain the network’s default state — making the resting brain less likely to land on rumination and more likely to land on connection and meaning.

Starting Simply

Three things that went well today. One sentence each. At the end of the day, for one week.

That’s the lowest-friction entry point the research supports. You don’t need a fancy journal. You don’t need to write much. The specificity matters more than the length — “I had a genuinely warm conversation with my colleague at lunch” does more than “today was okay.”

The brain is looking for signal. Specific, real gratitude provides it.
